La selva amazónica, tambíen conocida como la Amazonia, la jungla amazónica o la cuenca amazónica, comprende 7.000.000 de km² (1.700 millones de acres), aunque la jungla misma ocupa alrededor de 5.500.000 km² (1.400 millones de acres) y ocupa nueve países. La Amazonia representa más de la mitad de la selva tropical que queda en el planeta y contiene el mayor y más rico en especies sistema de selvas tropicales del mundo. La selva amazónica se desarrolla alrededor del río Amazonas y de su cuenca fluvial. Las altas temperaturas de este "pulmón del planeta" favorecen el desarrollo de una biodiversidad exuberante. El Río Amazonas es el más grande del mundo en volumen, con un caudal total mayor al de los primeros diez ríos del mundo sumados. Representa aproximadamente un quinto del caudal de los ríos del mundo y tiene la mayor cuenca del planeta. El río Amazonas con sus 6.800 km es el río más largo, el más caudaloso y el que tiene la cuenca de mayor superficie de nuestro planeta. Ningún puente lo cruza.
