El Distrito de los Lagos Masurianos está localizado en el nordeste de Polonia y contiene más de 2,000 lagos. Se extiende unos 290 km hacia el este, desde el río de Vistula hasta la frontera entre Polonia y Lituania y cubre una superficie de cerca de 52,000 km². Estos lagos se formaron durante la era glacial Pleistoceno, cuando el hielo cubría gran parte del norte de Europa. Muchos de sus cerros son partes de morrenas y muchos de sus lagos son embalses.
