Gruta de Jeita

Ubicada 20 kilómetros al norte de Beirut, en el valle de Nahr al-Kalb, la Gruta de Jeita es un conjunto de cuevas cristalizadas es una de las más grandes del mundo. Está compuesta por dos cuevas de piedra caliza, galerías en la parte superior y una cueva inferior a través de la cual fluye el “Río del Perro de 6.230 m de longitud. Desde el punto de vista geológico, las cuevas constituyen un túnel o ruta de escape para el río subterráneo. Las cuevas constituyen dos niveles. En esta cueva y galerías, la acción del agua sobre la piedra caliza ha creado bóvedas en forma de catedrales llenas de estalagtitas y estalagmitas de diferentes tamaños, colores y formas, cortinas majestuosas y fantásticas formaciones rocosas. Producidas por la erosión de las aguas contra la piedra, estas estructuras geológicas son en verdad piezas sorprendentes de arquitectura natural. La cueva mide mas de 9.000 m de longitud y da cabida a una de las más largas estalagtitas del mundo que suspende de 8,20 m. La gruta da lugar a un gran hall con una distancia de 108m entre el techo y el nivel del agua.
