El Parque Nacional de Komodo lo forman las tres grandes islas de Komodo, Rinca y Padar, así como otras pequeñas y numerosas islas, con una superficie total de unos 1.817 km², de los que 603 km² son terrestres. El parque nacional fue fundado en el año 1980, con el objetivo de proteger al dragón de Komodo (Varanus komodoensis) y luego la flora y la fauna de la región, incluyendo animales marinos. Dichas islas son de origen volcánico.
